Maersk Line, the world’s largest container ship operator, has uploaded details of its entire container stock into the non-profit BoxTech database, taking the total volume of container information documented on the database to 30 percent of the world container fleet. The database was launched in July 2016 to help shippers meet the demands of the International Maritime Organization’s Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations, which requires shippers to submit the weight of any container being shipped before it is loaded onto a vessel. However, the database, which lists the tare weight, max gross mass, and size type of each container, is increasingly used for non-SOLAS purposes, such as verifying container size and type or maximum gross weight, BoxTech says. https://www.joc.com/maritime-news/container-lines/maersk-line/maersk-adds-box-info-free-container-database_20170913.html
