The Port of New York and New Jersey will be able to accommodate ships carrying 14,000 TEUs at the Newark Bay terminals as soon as the Bayonne Bridge is raised which should be completed by the end of 2017.
This will allow the terminals to accept the largest ships that can travel the newly expanded Panama Canal.
The Army Corps of Engineers is going to conduct a study to determine any operational issues that may arise as a result of accepting these mega ships.
“With the planned completion of the 50-foot Harbor Deepening Project later this summer and the anticipated completion of the navigational clearance at the Bayonne Bridge late next year, I assure you the Port of New York, and New Jersey will be able to handle 14,000 ETU vessels toward the end of 2017”, said Port Director Molly Campbell.
