The global container volume forecast for 2017 was revised and increased due to a strong first quarter. Analysts adjusted the worldwide port throughput growth to 4.6 percent; earlier projections were 2 to 3 percent. The increased demand is good news for ocean carriers suffering from overcapacity but the surplus of container space is still an ongoing issue. The active fleet of ships has grown by 918,000 TEU year over year due to a reduction in idle fleet. The main North American ports recorded 7.4 percent growth in the first quarter.
