North American Free Trade Agreement Update
On September 5, President Trump advised Congress that the administration plans to reach a trade agreement with Mexico and potentially with Canada. The U.S. – Canada talks have restarted, Canada’s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, commenting “The atmosphere today has continued to be constructive and cordial”. Major sticking points (Such as Section 232 Tariffs on steel and aluminum, dairy and Chapter 19) still exist though with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying that “We will not sign a deal that is bad for Canadians”. U.S. Peak Season to Test Intermodal Service
The US intermodal peak season is expected to kick into high gear in the coming weeks and shippers hope that the service will be better than earlier this year, while forecasts show volume will be greater than a year ago. Data show that demand so far has been strong in all surface transportation modes this year and there are no signs that anything will change in the final four months of 2018. Global Container Shipping Stabilizes Just as Pitfalls Deepen
Market predictions of an approaching supply-demand balance in global container shipping that will support a recent upswing in pricing are looking less certain with fresh emerging market concerts, uncertainty over the impact of tariffs and prospects for more, and a persistent oversupply of capacity.
